Around 80 Glossop people gave up their evening on Wednesday 16 June to say how they would like their town to develop.
Bradbury Community House was packed for the first of three workshops organised by High Peak Borough Council to shape a Design and Place Making Strategy that will establish a vision and design principles for the future development of the town centre.
The session was led by urban design consultants Gillespies, who will translate the workshop ideas into a planning document that will eventually go to the Council for adoption as formal planning guidance.
Said Tony Kemp, Executive Councillor for Regeneration: "I was delighted by the turnout on Wednesday and the enthusiasm of all the people in the room. Glossop is a very special town, and any future development should reflect the ways in which local people want to see it grow, as well as helping to make it a place that is attractive to visitors.
"The vision has to come from the people who live or work in Glossop, as they understand the place better than anyone else.
"What we're doing with the workshops, by asking the people to write the planning guidance themselves, is still quite innovative around the country but is being responded to very well by the people of Glossop, judging by the turnout for the first workshop", he added.
The next session takes place at Bradbury House on Wednesday 30 June. Anyone attending is asked to arrive from 5.30pm to enable refreshments to be served before the three-hour session starts in earnest at 6pm.
To help plan the workshop, people wishing to attend are asked to register their interest no later than Friday 25 June by calling Sarah Porru on 0845 129 77 77/01298 28400 ext. 3523, by sending an e-mail to sarah.porru@highpeak.gov.uk or by visiting www.highpeak.gov.uk.
