New face on Council Executive

Date: 17/05/2010

Former High Peak Mayor Jean Wharmby was appointed to High Peak Borough Council's Executive at the authority's annual meeting on Tuesday 11 May.

The Dinting member succeeded Andrew Bingham as Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development following his election as High Peak MP on Thursday 6 May.

Elected to the council at a by-election in 2005, Councillor Wharmby was re-elected at the whole-council elections two years later.

Speaking after Tuesday's appointment, she said she intended to continue her predecessor's good work in promoting social inclusion and encouraging the provision of facilities for young people.

"I'll carry on serving all the people of High Peak to the best of my ability", she pledged.

Councillor Wharmby has sat on most of the council's corporate select committees, and was chairman of Social Inclusion as well as a member of the Development Control Committee. She represents the borough council on the governing body responsible for community transport for the High Peak.

She was elected to Derbyshire County Council in 2009 for Glossop South. She represents the county authority on the Peak District National Park Authority, and also sits on Derbyshire Sports Council.

She is a trustee of Age Concern and of the Glossop-based Mary Helen Allen Trust, which helps fund caring charities.

She is chairman of the ladies' section of Glossop's Royal British Legion branch. Under her direction, the section has seen membership rise from just a handful to 30 in the last two years, and the section celebrates its 50th birthday this year.

She said she was confident of being able to maintain her busy schedule of charitable work as a member of the Executive.

She is an active supporter of Glossop's twinning arrangements with the German town of Bad Vibel, taking part in many of the exchange visits which see the two towns taking turns annually to host groups of visitors.

A resident of Glossop for 41 years, she has been married to George - vice chairman of the county council - for 30 years. They have grown-up sons David and George plus grandsons Isaac and Joshua. But the latest edition to the family is Daisy the Labrador, which is just three months old!

With George, she ran a series of pubs and hotels for more than 30 years until 2004. A qualified chef, she has been self employed since 1987.
