Biodiversity simply means biological diversity – the variety of life on earth, from bacteria to whales, from the Amazon rainforests to our own back gardens.
The Borough Council is a member of the Peak District Biodiversity Partnership, which is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the individual Habitat and Species Action Plans, set out in the Local Biodiversity Action Plan for the Peak District. The Council will assess development proposals in relation to their effects on flora, fauna and wildlife habitats.
High Peak Borough Council plans to declare the first Local Nature Reserve in Buxton, at Ferneydale Grassland on Harpur Hill. The site – a mosaic of limestone grassland, with a small stream and associated areas of wet grassland – is alongside Ferneydale Avenue and close to Harpur Hill Primary School. It will be the sixth nature reserve in High Peak Borough.
