Buxton Design & Place Making Strategy

A programme of heritage-led regeneration has been underway in Buxton for a number of years as it invests in its historic open spaces and finds new uses for a number of its many important historic buildings. This programme is now paying dividends as the town starts to attract an increasing amount of commercial investment. However, it is important that a strategy is put into place to guide and manage future change to ensure the essential character of the town centre is protected and enhanced.

High Peak Borough Council has worked with the public to put together a strategy to provide a clear vision for how Buxton’s town centre will look as it continues to change and agree a set of design principles to guide and manage future change. An innovative, workshop-based approach was used in putting together the strategy so as to ensure that as many interested parties had their say in the final document. The workshops were held during 2009 following which the Council’s consultants have prepared a final strategy. This was adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document to the High Peak Local Plan in March 2010.
