East Midlands Manufacturing and Engineering Conference 2018

Building on the success of last year's conference, the 2018 Manufacturing and Engineering Conference will examine the latest thinking, policy and projections for the manufacturing sector in the East Midlands.

Last year saw major changes in the political and economic landscape, with 2018 showing no sign of respite - the day of the conference marks one year and one day before the UK's slated exit of the EU.

As the country looks to develop a vision for future success, the Government has launched its long awaited Industrial Strategy White Paper, with the original '10 Pillars', re-imagined as 5 areas for growth - Ideas; Infrastructure; People; Business Environment; Place, and the new addition of four 'Grand Challenges' around AI and Data, Clean Tech, Supporting an Ageing Society, and the Future of Mobility.

The sector also continues to see the perennial issue of access to skilled labour, this is clearly apparent from constant feedback taken from the Chamber's Quarterly Economic Survey. Looking at the Q4 data, 63% of respondents from the manufacturing sectors attempted to recruit, mainly due to growth of the business, of these 58% experienced problems finding suitable staff, the majority of these are for skilled manual/technical and professional/managerial roles.

The Conference will bring together leaders from across the sector and - through a series of keynotes and expert panel discussions - examine these challenges and more, looking to where opportunities present themselves, and working together to ensure that the East Midlands can continue to lead the Manufacturing and Engineering Sector in the UK and beyond

The conference is kindly hosted by the University of Nottingham at the Advanced Manufacturing Building on their Jubilee Campus, which will connect the campus to Derby road and the adjacent Gatehouse Lodge. The building comprises office space, laboratories and seminar space for the Faculty of Engineering.
