Are you proposing to re-open empty shops or reduce business rates?

Retailers make commercial decisions based on a wide range of factors when choosing where to locate stores - most of these factors are outside of the Council's influence and unfortunately the Government funding cannot be spent on either upgrading or creating new retail units.

Our proposals aim to attract customers into the heart of the shopping area by providing a new range of leisure, food and drink facilities - as well as new homes and business space - which, together with the new pedestrian route, will increase footfall in the town. This will make Buxton more attractive to both independent traders and national companies.

Business rates are set nationally by Government (Valuation Office) and we only collect the amount payable by each business. Legally we do not have the ability to offer a discount or give preferential tax deductions to certain retailers to encourage them to either come to or stay in the town.
