Deputy Mayor of High Peak

Councillor Graham Oakley was elected Deputy Mayor of the Borough Council on 5 May for 2022/23.

Graham was born in Hertford in 1952. He trained as a teacher in Norwich and then taught in Stevenage before becoming deputy head of a primary school in Glossop in 1981. He retired in 2021.

Graham is married to Val, they have several children and 8 grandchild. They have lived in Whitfield in Glossop (the ward on High Peak Borough Council that Graham represents) for the last 26 years.

They are a sporting couple. They played in the Manchester Mixed Hockey League and still play match tennis at Pyegrove Tennis Club. Val plays badminton and Graham plays in the Glossop Table Tennis League. They enjoy hill-walking and Graham is interested in environmental issues. He is a member of Greenpeace and the RSPB. He has an allotment on which he grows fine crops of thistles and dandelions.
