Transfer or change a licence

How to transfer or change a vehicle licence

Transferring a licence plate to a replacement vehicle

It may be necessary at some point to transfer the vehicle licence plate from one vehicle to another - this might be where a temporary replacement vehicle is obtained following an accident or repair to your regular vehicle, or where you buy a replacement vehicle and wish to transfer an existing plate onto it.

When transferring a plate from one vehicle to another, you should complete and submit the following form at least 14 days prior to the date of  transfer

You will need to submit the following information in support of your application;

  • a valid MOT pass certificate for the replacement vehicle carried out no more than ONE month prior to application
  • a valid Certificate of Insurance showing that the replacement vehicle is insured for carrying   passengers for hire purposes
  • the Registration Document if the vehicle has not been licensed before

You will also need to return the two expired Hackney Carriage/Private Hire plates when you collect your new plates.

Transferring a Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle to another person

Where a driver or operator wishes to transfer a Private Hire vehicle and plate from one party to another, the following form must be downloaded and completed by both parties. (Please note that it is not possible to transfer a Hackney Carriage vehicle & plate in the borough of High Peak).
