Swimming lessons boost in High Peak

Taking the plunge and learning to swim will get a little easier from next week when a new timetable of lessons is introduced at pools across the High Peak.

Lex Leisure, operator of leisure centres on behalf of High Peak Borough Council, is starting new group swimming lessons from Monday 9 September which will mean some changes to the public swimming times at Buxton, Glossop and New Mills.

The new group lessons will take place as follows and the pools will be closed for public swimming during these times:

·         Buxton - 4pm to 6.30pm on Tuesdays and 4pm to 6pm on Thursdays

·         Glossop and New Mills - 4pm to 6pm Tuesdays and Thursdays

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive member for leisure, said: "We're introducing these changes to meet the local demand for swimming lessons.

"Teaching young people to swim is one of the most important life skills and a great way for them to keep active. We are delighted we are able to respond to the increase in demand and offer more lesson slots, ensuring that children are not left on a waiting list.

"In order to accommodate these additional opportunities, some public swimming times will be moved. We have also created additional public swimming slots by increasing the availability in the mornings for lane swimmers and at weekends to encourage more families and young people to get involved and become more active."

The early morning lanes will be open in Buxton from 6.30am to 9.00am on Wednesdays and from 7.30am to 9.00am on Saturdays and Sundays; in Glossop the times are 6.30am to 9.00am Mondays to Fridays and from 7.30am to 9.00am at weekends; and in New Mills the extra times are 6.30am to 9.00am Tuesdays and Thursdays.
