Step forward for better health

Published on 30 May 2022

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective forms of exercise and it's easy to get started thanks to a developing network of local walks across the High Peak.

Through the Walking Movement, High Peak Borough Council is working with voluntary sector partners, including High Peak CVS and Zink and The Bureau, to develop a network of walks in local communities led and managed by individuals, groups or organisations.

The aim is to encourage people to move more and increase the amount of physical activity they do.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said: "Walking is something that many people can take part in and it's a great way to be more active and move more.

"It's a simple and effective form of exercise - and it's free - so I'm delighted that, working alongside our valued voluntary sector partner and community groups, we've started this Walking Movement in the High Peak.

"Moving more has so many physical and mental health benefits which is why we're prioritising the development of a diverse range of activities and opportunities to encourage more and more people to start, or increase, their physical activity."

Walks range from gentle, which are suitable for people who haven't walked much before, to next steps for those who want to take it a little further through to progression walks which are more challenging.

And it's not just your physical health that stands to improve, your social life might too! Joining a walking group is a great way to meet other people with similar interests and make new friends as well as finding out more about where you live.

Councillor Greenhalgh added: "We really want to expand the walks to cover as many communities as possible so more and more people across the Borough can share the physical and social benefits of walking - and we need your help! We're looking for people to volunteer to lead walks in every corner of the High Peak.

"Discovered a new route whilst exercising locally over the Covid lockdown, or know an old favourite you've been using for years, then why not share them with others  who want to get out more? It's win-win and such a rewarding role so please get in touch with our dedicated Walking Movement officer Ross Jillings if you'd like to be involved."

Through the Walking Movement we're also looking to offer new activities in local green spaces including family activities and walk, jog and run routes in parks.

Find out more at www.highpeak.gov.uk/WalkingMovement or email ross.jillings@highpeak.gov.uk with your details and where in the High Peak you'd like to volunteer.

We also want to hear from you if you already run a walking group - let us know and we'll share your details on our website.
