Work on Manor Park Active Zone set to start

Work is set to start on a new Active Zone in Glossop's Manor Park - a space that has been shaped by the local community.

High Peak Borough Council is investing in improving parks and green spaces in recognition of the vital role they play in the health and wellbeing of residents.

This latest project at Manor Park will create an Active Zone - an inclusive and accessible space within the public park that encourages people aged 14 and over to be active - to complement the previous investment in new play areas and equipment for toddlers and older children.

Consultation with park users and the local community has helped inform the final designs which have been revised following feedback. The main changes include:

  • Removing the football element of the multi-use games area to provide a designated space for sports such as basketball and netball and increasing the height of the fencing in this area
  • Upgrading the 5-a-side area to a substantial hard-standing area for football, tennis and other sports, and informal activities
  • More informal seating and social spaces to encourage social interaction and informal movement
  • Removal of graphics and elements that were seen as play provision for younger children
  • Clear signage to support the use of the space by people aged 14 plus and provide clarity on the zone's purpose

The café will also form part of the wider improvement programme and the opportunity to run this facility, with a community focus, will be advertised by the Council following the recent retirement of the previous tenant.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said: "I'm absolutely delighted that work on the new Active Zone in Manor Park is about to begin. With a £330,000 investment, we're making a huge step forward in improving the facilities available - especially for adults and teenagers - so that more people across High Peak can enjoy being active and social in our parks.

"We've listened carefully to the feedback from local people, and I'm pleased to say we've retained the option for playing informal tennis within the upgraded 5-a-side area, alongside space for football and other sports. This means the facilities will be more versatile and appealing to a wider range of park users.

"We love our parks and are committed to making them the very best they can be for everyone. This project is all about creating spaces that inspire movement, health and wellbeing - and I can't wait to see more people enjoying Manor Park and getting active together."
