Free septic tank upgrades now available in High Peak
Eligible property owners and businesses could receive a free septic tank upgrade as part of a scheme to help protect High Peak's rivers and reduce the release of harmful nutrients into our waterways.
High Peak Borough Council and Alliance Norse are working with specialist water and wastewater engineers WCI to offer around 75 new sewage treatment plants to homes, hotels, B&Bs and campsites to help owners meet increasingly stringent environmental standards and protect the Borough's rivers and waterways including the Derwent and Wye and their tributaries.
The programme is funded by the Government through a nutrient offset partnership meaning eligible property owners pay nothing for installation. It is open to properties with existing septic tanks or outdated treatment systems within the Buxton project area.
Property owners must register their interest by 28 February to qualify.
Executive Councillor for Planning, Godfrey Claff, said: "I'm delighted that we're leading the way in High Peak by offering these state-of-the-art upgrades which will help improve the water quality of our rivers and streams - a priority for both the Council and our residents.
"The level of phosphates in the River Wye has been holding up development, particularly of much-needed housing in the Buxton and Dove Holes area, so this will help unlock the blocks and enable us to progress planning applications whilst ensuring they don't adversely affect protected habitats.
"We're writing to the owners of properties that are likely to be eligible and I'd urge people not to miss this opportunity and to make sure they are registered before the deadline at the end of February."
Executive Councillor for Climate Change and Environment, Jean Todd, commented: "This scheme directly addresses pollution at the source by supporting households and businesses with otherwise potentially expensive but essential upgrades to their drainage systems.
"The benefits are clear - an improved environment for everyone and a significant increase in the number of modern, compliant drainage systems at properties across our Borough and I hope those eligible take advantage of this offer."
There's more information on the Council's website or you can register direct at highpeak-upgrades.co.uk or call the dedicated team on 01984 300 106.
Brad Taylor, Managing Director of WCI Group, said: "We're delighted to partner with the Council to deliver these upgrades for the High Peak community. With more than 40 years' experience in the wastewater industry, we've seen first-hand the challenges facing rural property owners with aging drainage systems.
"What makes this scheme so special is that it's a genuine win-win. Property owners receive a professional septic tank upgrade worth thousands of pounds and we collectively protect some of Britain's most beautiful rivers and waterways."
