Flag raising to mark National Holocaust Memorial Day

The Mayor of High Peak Borough Council, Councillor Dom Starkey, will be leading local commemorations to mark National Holocaust Memorial Day on Tuesday 27 January.

He will take part in a short flag-raising ceremony in Buxton and then Glossop to mark the day when the Auschwitz Concentration Camp was liberated from the Nazis on 27 January 1945.

The annual event has become a time to reflect on the Holocaust and all other holocausts that have taken place around the world throughout history.

The High Peak flag raising events will be followed by the Mayor saying a few words in remembrance of holocaust victims. The events will be taking place as follows:

Buxton: 9.45am for a 10am start
Location: By the flagpole next to the Band Stand, Pavilion Gardens

Glossop: 11.45am for a 12noon start
Location: By the flagpole at Norfolk Square

The Mayor said: "I would be honoured if residents across both places could join me at one of these commemorations as we remember the victims of the Holocaust and reflect on its enduring significance. Everyone is welcome."
