Capital&Centric's Buxton reboot takes another huge step forward

Social-impact developer Capital&Centric has revealed its final plans for the transformation of The Springs in Buxton, the £100 million glow-up being brought forward with High Peak Borough Council.

The plans include a residential-led neighbourhood with 332 design-led homes for rent, plenty of spots for independent bars, shops, and cafés, and a more accessible route from the railway station will make getting into town much easier. The River Wye will also be opened up, creating green public spaces, great for riverside dining and events, while plant-packed public squares will offer the perfect place to relax.

This follows extensive conversations with locals over the last 12 months, with feedback from the two-stage consultation helping to shape the plans. The result is a design full of nods to Buxton's past including colonnades, bay windows, and the use of traditional materials like limestone and gritstone (sandstone), which give Buxton its distinctive colour and architectural character.

The suggestions from locals weren't only about aesthetics, with the final plans also adding some practical touches with two new public toilet blocks and a feature lift serving the station entrance.

Capital&Centric is also delivering the wide range of housing Buxton has asked for, with townhouses and apartments including amenities like a resident gym, a mini cinema and co-working spaces. The new homes will provide options for everyone, and all will be made available at prices to suit local working people.

New and existing residents in the town can look forward to a community that buzzes from day into night, with the developer already talking to local indies about setting up shop there, targeting businesses that will complement the existing Buxton offer.

John Moffat, Joint Managing Director at Capital&Centric, said:

"Over a thousand people came to chat with us across various community consultations, so it's great to have submitted plans that are designed in partnership with local people and businesses. The final vision complements what already makes the town great and is all the better for being shaped by those who know and love it the most.

"We've made the plans even greener, expanded the housing offer, and put options for indie businesses right at the heart of the community. There's a real opportunity here to create something that celebrates Buxton's heritage and character while also giving the town centre the revitalisation it deserves. We can't wait to get spades in the ground and make this vision a reality."

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, at High Peak Borough Council, said:

"This is a landmark moment for Buxton. After seven years of hard work, the Council is pleased to reach a major milestone with the submission of plans for the revitalisation of our town centre.

"What began with £6.6 million from the Government's Future High Street Fund, alongside £4.2 million of our own funds, the Council purchasing The Springs shopping centre and appointing Capital&Centric as our development partner, has now progressed into a £100 million+ scheme we believe will bring lasting benefits for the town.

"Importantly, this scheme has been shaped by local people. We have listened to feedback throughout the consultations and acted on it, strengthening the plans to reflect what residents and businesses want and addressing concerns on parking and affordable housing.

"This really is a once in a generation opportunity to enhance what already makes Buxton such a great place to live in and to visit. The proposals breathe new life in a key part of the town that people will want to make their home - creating a vibrant destination with new homes, leisure and retail, attractive public spaces, more greenery, and the reopening of the River Wye at its heart."

A planning application has been submitted to the Council which will need to be validated. Once validation has been made the application will become `live` and can be read and commented on at Planning Applications - High Peak Borough Council.

Notification the application has gone live and a link to it will be published on Capital&Centric and High Peak Borough Council's social media.
