Waste and recycling fleet wears poppies with pride

Waste and recycling vehicles in the High Peak are once again wearing poppies with pride during this year's annual season of remembrance in honour of the Armed Forces community.

The Royal British Legion, the UK's biggest armed forces charity, runs the annual poppy appeal campaign to raise the funds it needs to support service men, women and their families whenever and wherever they need it.

High Peak Borough Council and its waste collection partner Alliance Environmental Services are supporting the appeal, and the people it helps, as they do every year.

High Peak Mayor, Councillor Barbara Hastings-Asatourian, who is also the Council's Armed Forces Champion, said: "This is always a poignant time of year for the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces and wearing poppies is one way we can all show our support and gratitude for their sacrifices and commitment to public duty.

"We are proud to be able to once again support the Royal British Legion's annual poppy campaign by displaying them on our waste collection fleet. We know it means a lot to our veterans and those people serving today and their families."

There are a number of services taking place across the High Peak on Remembrance Sunday 8 November. Details of the services in Buxton, Glossop, and Hadfield, including the orders of service, are now available on our website.

The Council has pledged its ongoing commitment to our service personnel by signing the Armed Forces Covenant - a promise made by the nation to ensure that those who serve, or have served, and their families are treated fairly.

We have recently been awarded the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Award for our sustained commitment to supporting the armed forces community.

The Award celebrates employers who are actively creating supportive environments for reservists, veterans, the cadet movement and military families.

The Council was one of just three councils in the East Midlands to receive a silver in this year's awards.
