Raising the roof at the Pavilion Gardens
Work to repair the roofs and carry out other upgrades at Buxton's historic Pavilion Gardens is progressing well as the second phase of this major project gets underway.
High Peak Borough Council has commissioned the work which, so far, has included recovering and timber repair and replacement in the roofs over the Pavilion Arts Centre, the retail area, and the central area, replacing decaying windows, new glazing on the Cupola, and renewing some rainwater goods so they are better able to deal with water run-off.
The Gardens, including the theatre area, has remained open during these works.
The next phase of the £2.02 million project includes works to the remaining roofs, including those over the conservatory, the kitchen, the link corridor, and the toilets.
Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said: "The Pavilion Gardens is one of the High Peak's favourite leisure destinations for both locals and visitors as well as being one of the most important and distinctive heritage buildings that give Buxton it's unique character.
"These buildings date from 1871 so, as responsible custodians, it's important that we invest in the upkeep of the buildings and the grounds to ensure we can all enjoy them today and for generations to come.
"That's why we're making this significant investment in these necessary repairs. It's a big project but one that needs doing and I'd like to thank everyone who comes to the Gardens for their patience whilst this work is carried out."
Alongside the roofing upgrades, the project also includes improving the heating systems and refurbishing the toilets. This work will take place in the new year and may affect the availability of the venue for visitors.
The Council is working closely with Parkwood Leisure Ltd, who operate the venue on its behalf, throughout the refurbishment programme to minimise disruption wherever possible and ensure that customers and stakeholders are kept informed of any changes to the availability of the facility.
Councillor Greenhalgh added: "Once the plans are finalised we'll share the information with everyone. We'll be keeping our website up to date so please check for the latest updates."
