Voter ID

The UK Government has introduced a requirement for voters to show photo ID when voting at a polling station. This new requirement will apply for the first time in England at the local elections on Thursday 4 May 2023.

How to vote in person

A Poll card for each member of the household who is registered to vote will be delivered before the election. The Poll card will tell you the date of the Election, where your Polling Station is and its opening hours. You do not need to take your Poll card with you to be able to vote. However, you will need to show photo ID to vote. Staff at the polling stations will check your ID.

A list of accepted ID and details of how to apply for free ID is available on the Electoral Commission's website. From 16 January 2023, anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID will be able to apply for free ID online or by completing a paper form. The last date to apply for Voter Authority Certificates to use as ID when voting is 5.00pm on Tuesday 25 April.
