Redevelopment of MyActive New Mills gets green light
Work on the £3.7 million redevelopment of MyActive New Mills is set to start around the end of this month.
High Peak Borough Council has worked with the local community and councillors, leisure centre users, and its leisure company MyActive, who manage and operate its leisure centres and swimming pools, to draw up the plans for the major upgrade which will deliver a health and wellbeing centre fit for now and the future.
Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said: "It's fantastic news for users of the centre - at a time when so many councils are having to make the difficult decision not to invest in their leisure amenities, we are going to be starting work on a major redevelopment at New Mills before the end of the year.
"We've listened to the community whilst developing the designs to ensure that this significant investment in improvements delivers a centre that meets community needs. It will provide modern, state-of-the-art fitness equipment and spaces that will encourage people to be more active, provide opportunities to meet others and socialise, and support everyone who is advised to exercise more to improve their health.
"It's an exciting new chapter for New Mills - and the wider community in the High Peak - and we can't wait to get started."
The redevelopment includes:
- Expanding the fitness gym to provide an additional 20 equipment spaces
- A new 25-person multi-use studio
- Refurbishing the spin studio
- A new community wellness suite
- Refurbishing the dry changing area
- A new reception area
- Six new bike parking cycle hoops and shelter
Ian Sales, Head of Operations at MyActive, said: "This is an important investment in the future of MyActive New Mills and the communities we serve. The redevelopment will allow us to offer improved fitness facilities, more opportunities for group exercise, and dedicated spaces that support health and wellbeing.
"Our focus throughout the project will be on supporting our members, keeping people active, and maintaining as many services as possible while the improvements take place.
"We know that building work will bring some temporary disruption, but we're committed to keeping customers informed and making the transition as straightforward as possible. We're looking forward to welcoming everyone into a significantly improved centre next year."
Following feedback received from members, local councillors and the wider community, a new Changing Places facility has also been included in the redevelopment providing fully-accessible changing amenities for people who require additional space and equipment.
The work will mean temporary partial closure of the centre but it will be phased and some service levels will be maintained throughout.
Councillor Greenhalgh added: "There will, inevitably be some disruption whilst the work takes place, but we've worked hard to minimise that and ensure that alternative arrangements are in place. We'll be in contact with MyActive members soon to share more details of the work programme and any temporary changes to service provision and we'll also share details on the Council's website and social media channels."
The redevelopment means the removal of the existing squash courts at the centre and the Council has maintained a dialogue with the squash club to offer support in identifying alternative options for players.
The club is looking to establish a partnership with an existing facility and the Council has agreed to provide them with a small grant to facilitate the transition.
