Dates announced for changes to food and garden waste collections

With Councils across England now required by law to make a separate food waste collection each week, the Borough Council has announced that preparations are underway to commence this service in the High Peak from mid-September when residents will need to present any food waste separately from garden waste.

At the same time, the Council and its waste and recycling collection partner Alliance Environmental Services (AES) will be introducing an opt-in subscription scheme for collecting household garden waste. Everyone wishing to continue to benefit from this service will be able to register and pay the £46 annual subscription fee when the portal goes live at the start of July.

Collecting garden waste is a discretionary service and the Borough Council, like many other Councils in Derbyshire and across the country, has decided to introduce a fee for anyone who wants to continue with this service.

Councillor Jean Todd, Executive Councillor for Climate Change and Environment, said: "We're working hard to put in place the necessary arrangements for the introduction of the weekly food waste collections, so I'm pleased to be able to update residents on our progress.

"To help people prepare, we'll be issuing food waste caddies to all households from the end of July which will include full details of what the changes mean and what people need to do.

"The opt-in garden waste collection subscription scheme will also start in September and the portal where people can sign up will be available from the beginning of July - we will be sharing more details about that before it goes live, so I'd encourage people who want to subscribe to check our website and follow our social media channels for the latest news."

The Council and AES want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to adapt to the new collections and will be writing to all households ahead of the delivery of the food caddies in the summer.

Councillor Todd added: "No-one needs to change how they present their waste and recycling at the moment, but changes are coming. To help everyone feel comfortable with that, we'll be writing to all households before we start the weekly food and subscription garden waste collections. And, when the changes do start, our waste and customer services teams will provide assistance to support residents if they need it."

The Council will also be subsidising composting bins for residents who don't want to subscribe to the garden waste collection service but who do want to manage their waste at home. More details will be available about this soon.

The bins and recycling section of the Council's website will also be updated ahead of the changes.
