Here are some more details of what we can and can't compost from your garden.

We can only compost...
(please make sure all food waste is taken out of it's packaging before putting in the bin)

Grass
Leaves
Weeds (not Japanese knotweed or ragwort)
Flowers and plants
Hedge clipping or pruning's
Branches and twigs
Windfall fruit
Small quantities of hay or straw bedding from non meat eating small pets e.g. Rabbits or guinea pigs
Real Christmas trees (make sure you remove all decorations and the base)

We can't compost...

Plastic bags, flowerpots, seed trays or other plastic items
Cat or dog faeces
Large branches or tree stumps
Soil, stones or rubble
Painted or treated wood
Himalayan Balsam - Find out more on how to identify, control and dispose of invasive non-native plants that can harm the environment.
Glass, metal, plastic, paper or cardboard
Other rubbish from the garden

Compostable bags

Compostable bags can be bought from local supermarkets including Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose, Aldi and Co Op.

If you buy your own bags, please make sure they are compostable (not biodegradable) and show the EN13432 code and compostable "seed logo" (PDF, 133 KB) (opens new window).

But ...

You don't have to buy compostable bags.
Garden waste does not have to be contained in a compostable bag to be recycled. You can recycle your garden waste by putting the material straight into your green lidded bin loose.

Bags not to use

Please do not use plastic bags. Plastic of any kind will not break down in the composting process and means the soil improver cannot be used on local fields. If we see any plastic in your green lidded bin we will not empty it, as this will contaminate the collection load.
